Inauguration Function of Ecoliteracy Programme in CREA
A joint programme with Centre for Ecoliteracy - USA
Ecoliteracy or awareness of our ecological system in an intimate is the need of the hour. Ecological degradation is at its peak with scant respect shown to nature and with total lack of sensitivity to the after effects of the disasters that we are bringing upon ourselves.
On 30.08.2003, CREA Children's Academy, a unit of Manitham Foundation, launched the programme towards Ecoliteracy. The model is adopted from the programme run by "The Centre for Ecoliteracy" U.S.A for schools in the state of California. A close exchange of ideas and the programme content will be maintained between the two organisations.
CREA's focus will be on making the children eco-friendly in their thinking and action. In other words the mission is to generate an eco-friendly culture.
The inaugural function was presided over by the Treasurer of Manitham. Margaret Tiburtius. She has volunteered to co-ordinate this programme. She is a great lover of nature and has to her credit installing eco-friendly close systems in Industry.
The Children from class III to class V, in the age group of 8 to 10, exhibited their keen interest and leadership in taking on board this programme. They presented the audience short speeches, poems and songs based on the following themes:
Protection of soil, water and atmosphere
Adverse effect of industrial plastics
The contamination food and drink with pesticides and other pollutants
Love of animals and birds
The Chairperson of Manitham, Barnabas Tiburtius, congratulated the children on their talents and creativity. He judged a painting contest and announced the winners. The theme of painting competition was on 'Environment and Beauty of nature'.
For the years 2003 - 2004, the children, staff and parents, have chosen 'Greening the Campus' as the main Ecoliteracy programme. It is proposed to plant 100 trees around the school campus. This programme was started with planting of samplings on this day.
Manitham web site will keep you updated on the programme.
We are confident that this programme will make its contribution in inculcating Ecoliteracy in the children of not only CREA but to the community at large.
